After only two years, Katie Ledecky folded and closed her college career. That does not mean she will stop studying at Stanford (and does not necessarily mean she will stop swimming at Stanford), it just means she will not swim anymore for Stanford in college competitions.
Because Katie Ledecky is becoming a professional! In the two and a quarter years to Tokyo, Ledecky will have contracts of money and advertising, and will enjoy her swimming ability economically. And rightly so!
Ledecky must have realized that the experience of the college group could not substitute for millions of dollars that could fix her future. And it was a pity for Missy Franklin who made the transition too late, and lost millions of dollars herself for the NCAA's "amateur" ethos.
